year and West Valley Jr College in California for one semester. He traveled
throughout the Orient-Japan, Hong Kong, Philippines, Guam, Okinawa, and

television tech. And upon returning to Nebraska, went to work for KUON-TV.
When the Nebraska weather got to him, he returned to the west coast to work
in video manufacturing, and went to work for ITT Mackay Marine doing repair
on navigation and communication equipment on large tankers and cargo ships.
Jerry holds an FC radio and telephone license with Radar Endorsement and is a
graduate of San Francisco College of Electronics. Jerry and Sandra enjoy

1997 – Here my wife and I
sit in a motor home in front of our house in Valdez, Alaska. We are waiting
for our house sale to close and then we are leaving Alaska to move on to our
46-foot sailboat in Guaymas, Mexico. I tell you this because I wanted to let
you know that I really wanted to make the celebration this time. However, due to the plans we have made for
our future we are not going to make a trip to Nebraska this year. I thought
it would be appropriate to send a short overview of what has happened since
graduation. October 1962 I flew to San Diego to attend US Navy basic training
and Electronic Schooling. I was stationed on the U.S.S. Coral Sea for three
years and three months. Spent two tours in Viet Nam (1965 & 1966) I left
the Navy in October 1966. Worked for KUON-TV as a Dubbing Engineer for Great
Plains Television Library in Lincoln and attended UNL for two semesters (1966
– 1967). The summer of 1967 I left Nebraska to join the throng of young
‘flower children’ in San Francisco. I met my wife in 1968 and we were married
6 weeks later. Sandy Griffin-Ilkenhons is third generation Californian. We
celebrated 29 years together and have one son who is with us in Alaska. He is
married, no children. He served in the US Navy as an Operations Specialist.
He plans on finishing college next year as a computer programmer/engineer. We
have been in Alaska 17 years working in the Telecommunications industry. For
the last 7 years I have worked for Alyeska Pipeline Service Company keeping
20% of the nations oil flowing. Recently I was given the opportunity to take
an ‘early out’ package as the company is ‘downsizing’. We decided to take the
package and ‘go sailing’. We recently purchased a 46-foot steel center
cockpit ketch built in Holland. The previous owners sailed her for 15 years
all through the Caribbean, South America, Africa, Spain, and Mexico. We have
sold all of our furniture, our house, and land and plan on moving aboard the
vessel this year. The objective is to sail around the world. We want to be
stationed on the Equator and the Dateline for the 2000 year celebration. The
name of the vessel is “Windseeker II”. |
