Life Highlights –

What you have told us about yourself these past 40 years

 

1972 – Jon and Cheryl, both graduates of the class of 1962, have one little girl, Julie who was one year old on May 26. Jon earned a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Nebraska and is now an engineer for the Nebraska Department of Roads. Cheryl earned a BS in Elementary Education from the University of Nebraska and taught third grade for three years. She also was an insurance receptionist and correspondent for one year and is now a mother and homemaker. Jon worked on the design of the award winning Structural Steel Bridge in Omaha and enjoys golf, basketball, bowling, bridge, poker, and softball in his spare time. His softball trips have taken him to: St Louis, MO; Kansas City, KS; and various cities in Iowa and Nebraska. Cheryl taught Sunday School for two years and also bowls, plays golf, bridge, knits, sews, reads, and plays women’s softball. They have had vacations to: Mesa, AZ; camping in Colorado mountains; Tablerock Lake in Missouri; and Las Vegas, NV. Jon has had business trips to: Oklahoma City, OK; Springfield, IL; Chicago, IL; and Washington D.C.

 

1982 – Jon and Cheryl have been married 16 years and have 2 daughters. Julie Ann is 11 and Wendy Lynn is 7. Both Jon and Cheryl have BS degrees from the University of Nebraska. Cheryl’s is in Elementary Education (1966) and Jon’s is in Chemical Engineering (1968). Cheryl has taught 3rd grade (1966-1969), worked as a receptionist/correspondent for Lincoln Liberty Life (1969-1970), and is currently working part-time as a receptionist for Anderson’s Photography Studio. Jon has worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads since his graduation. During his tenure he has worked in the Construction, Bridge Design, and Data Processing Divisions. His is currently in charge of the engineering and teleprocessing programmers / systems analysts. Both Jon and Cheryl enjoy participating in all types of sports, card games (especially bridge) and raising their family.

 

1987 – Jon, Cheryl, Julie (16), and Wendy (12) enjoy sports in their spare time. Cheryl bowled a 620 series to lead her team to the city championship. Jon belongs to an “over 35” softball team, which has won 3 of the first 4 state “Master’s” Championships. They both play volleyball, bridge (mostly Cheryl), and also golf. Julie is a junior at LNE and plays volleyball and basketball (just like dad). Wendy is still blossoming. Jon works for the Nebraska Department of Roads as Computer Systems Division Engineering Systems Manager. Cheryl is a full time wife and mother and a part-time receptionist for “The Cabinet Maker”. She also helps make and market a new product, “Snapi”, toy tethers for infants.

 

1997 – Cheryl and Jon’s summer free time is devoted to GOLF, relaxing, reading, and more golf. During the winter our free time is used reading, relaxing, bowling, and (only when necessary) exercise.

 

2002 – Jon and Cheryl will celebrate their 36th wedding anniversary this year. Both our daughters are married. Wendy married Chad Martin on July 22, 2000 and Julie married Josh Borchers on September 29, 2000. The biggest event during the last five years was the birth of our first grandchild (Kaitlynn Ann Borchers) on December 28th, 2000. We have both enjoyed the role of grandparent. Cheryl is currently on the Lincoln Women’s Municipal Golf Association (LWMGA) board serving as Events Co-chairman. Cheryl has retired after teaching 4-5 year olds at Westminster Preschool (and seems to be getting into the retirement life style). Jon is still working at the Nebraska Department of Roads as the Information Systems Division Manager. He has also been elected as an officer in the Highway Engineering Exchange Program (HEEP) organization. This year he serves as Secretary, 2003 he will be Vice-president, and in 2004 will be President and host the International meeting in Lincoln. One of the advantages of being an officer is the chance to attend all the ‘Area’ meetings [there are four in the continental US and one in Central Europe] plus the International meeting (always held in North America). This years meetings were in Providence, RI; Charleston, WV; Topeka, KS, Whitefish, MT, and Treiste, Italy. Cheryl was able to attend both the meetings in Montana and Italy.

 

2007 – The last four years have been productive, four more grandchildren. Each daughter has given us two more grandchildren, three beatuiful girls and one bouncing boy. Julie, Josh, Kaitie, Abbie, and Alex live in Wahoo and Wendy, Chad, Paiton, and Dakota live in Eagle, all less than 30 minutes away. We are throughly enjoy spoiling them rotten and teaching them all the things that their parents don’t want them to know. Cheryl has retired and is drawing early Social Security. She is also the 2007 President of the Lincoln Women’s Municipal Golf Association (last year she was President-elect). Each of these offices have many duties that keep her busy and frustrated (she just thought she was retired). Jon continues to work at the Nebraska Department of Roads (3+ more years hopefully). A re-organization 1.5 years ago meant a reassignment and downgrading of duties (and pay). While a disappointment we are muddling through (3+ years to go).  Jon still attempts to play golf as much as possible but age seems to have started to affect his game. Shots seem to be shorter and crookeder, with higher scores. We have been fortunate these last five years to be invited to attend the Area HEEP Meetings held in Europe. We have gotten to visit Croatia, Slovakia, Lithuania, Poland, and have just returned from Hungary.
