Life Highlights –

What you have told us about yourself these past 40 years

1972 – Vyrla and Jerry have five children, Gary Lee Jackson (11), Julie K Kunert (9), Sherry Lee Jackson (8), Barry Lee Jackson (7), and Scott Vyrie Kunert (6). Vyrla is a receptionist at the South Bend Drug Company and is active in PTA, room mother for both Julie and Scott, and sews for Julie, Sherry, and herself. After graduation she lived in Grand Island, moved to Lincoln, moved to Hoff  Man Estates, ILL. In 1969 and moved to South Bend, Indiana in 1970. She was one of the 100 finalists in the Pillsbury Bake-off 22 in 1971 held in Honolulu, Hawaii. She won the trip, a new GE range, and $100, and appeared on local television and fixed her recipe for local groups. They are avid Nebraska Football fans and live only four blocks from Notre Dame University! They bowl in a mixed league during the winter and have become interested in winter sports: tobogganing, ice-skating, and snowmobiles.

1982 – Vyrla is Quality Assurance Specialist for the US Defense Logistics Agency, duty stationed at Uniroyal, Inc. in Mishawaka, IN. Vyrla has 2 children, Julie (19) and Scott (17). She is Committee Chairperson for Boy Scout Troop #320, and won the ‘Scouter of the Year’ award in 1981 (White Beaver District, BSA). She also is a freelance writer and has been published in the South Bend Tribune, the Lincoln Journal-Star, and the Notional Journal for Single Parents. Vyrla was a finalist in the Pillsbury Bake-off held in Honolulu in  ’71 and Defense Suggestor of the year in ‘*). Vyrla is also a part-time student at Indiana University and hopes to complete an associate degree in Science.

1987 – Vryla is a Quality Assurance Specialist with the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Command in warren, MI. Her son, Scott Kunert is 22. Her daughter, Julie Nijak (24) gave Vryla her first grandson, Gary Michael Nijak, Jr., in November 1986. Vryla says he is the love of his grandma’s life! Since moving to Michigan in 1984, she has traveled to 28 cities in the U.S. and to South Korea and North Africa on business. Vryla sews, writes articles and short stories and is a fan of the Detroit Pistons and Red Wings.

1997 – Sorry I can’t be there – I’m finishing my Master of Science Degree in Quality Engineering at Eastern Michigan University. I will graduate in Dec. ’97. Wish I had paid more attention to high school chemistry and algebra!! I miss the culture and the safety we grew up in. On one of my work assignments, I was told that my Nebraska work ethic got me the job. But - #1 – I love being a Grandma!!

2002 – I’m looking forward to retiring in 2004 – less than 2 years away. I am moving to the west side of Michigan to be closer to my grandkids. I read the Journal-Star on the Net. No one in Michigan knows what Runzas are.
